The Riq (riqq)
The riq is an instrument from the percussion instrument family, which is made of wood with pairs of cymbals combined in the frame. On the riq is usually plastic or skin. The riq has over 50 different names in different countries and cultures around the world. The riqs differ from each other by their size, and the number of cymbals. The riqq is usually held in the heads of the dreamer and he is using both the head and the cymbals to produce countless number of different sounds.
The riq is the most ancient drum in the world. In its original version, it was made out of wooden frame with goat, sheep or fish stretched over it. The earliest version is known to us from a small bronze statue 5000 years old, that features a character playing it.
Until around 1950, the riq was common more at the egyptian world, and the levant. In north africa a similar instrument was used but with a different name: Tar.
Over the years, the riq was appreciated by its unique timbre, complexity and the high variety of sounds it can produce. Moreover, its magic bears in the fact the it need a lot of practice to achieve a virtuoso performance.
