Persian Santur origin

The santur is an amazing instrument with a history that goes back over 3000 years. Originating in the Persian Empire, it's a close relative of the piano and creates a sound that's both rich and magical. Before it found its home in Persia, the santur was popular in the Assyrian Empire, especially in northern Syria. When the Persians took over, they adopted the santur and it became a key part of their musical culture. From there, it spread to many other regions, including Armenia, Turkey, India, and even medieval Europe, where it became known as the hammered dulcimer.

Santur name meaning

The name "santur" means "hundred strings" or "many strings," which is fitting because it has a lot of strings. The instrument is typically made from aged walnut or black rosewood, chosen for the specific sound qualities these woods provide. The strings are tightened using tuning pegs on one side of the trapezoid-shaped body. In Persian music, the modes are called "Dastgah," similar to "Maqam" in Arabic music. Each Dastgah requires its own tuning, so santur players often need to retune their instrument for different pieces. For more information about dastgah, check out our The Santur Dastgah's Guide

Playing the Santur

Playing the santur involves striking the strings with two small mallets, called mezrabs. These mallets are usually carved from olive wood and wrapped in fabric, which can vary depending on the sound the player wants to achieve. Skilled players are known for their precise ear, tuning the instrument by listening carefully to each string.

Learning to Play the santur

Learning to play the santur can be a rewarding journey. Whether you're just starting out or you're an experienced musician, there's always something new to discover with this instrument. The santur's history, its beautiful sound, and the skill required to play it make it a fascinating addition to any musician's repertoire. So, if you have the chance, give the santur a try and see how it can add a touch of ancient magic to your music.

Arabic Khaleeji Oud Dubai Premium

A Breathtaking Oud.

The Khaleeji Dubai Premium Oud is the most beautiful Oud I have ever laid my eyes on. It is very simply decorated, elegant, with precise craftsmanship, very deep, warm and with depth sound and detailed nuances. I couldn’t ask for more. My dream just came true. And I know that the more I play and interact with my Khaleeji Oud, the more and more the sound will mature and become even warmer and sweeter. I feel so lucky that I was able to own a musical instrument of this stature. Just listen to the sound sample of the video that the site provides you with ( carefully ) and you will understand what I mean. Thank you Ethnic Musical for my beautiful and sensitive Oud.
