There’s a lot of buzz going on around these handpans. So, you know already that the hang drum isn’t an ancient instruments, but rather a creation of the 21st-century. Its design was inspired by the steel pan, the national instrument of Trinidad. The Steel pan is a single bowl with indentations, that requires a special stand.
However, Felix & Sabina have had a twist on it, by adding the another bowl. This portable version, is what now is know as the Pantam.
Why Are Hang Pans Expensive?
Now, let's address the elephant in the room: the price. Hang pans aren't your flute over the desk instrument that you can pick up at any music store. They're handcrafted, requiring hours of painstaking labor and expertise. The custom metal blend used in their construction also adds to the cost.
So, when you buy a hang pan, you're paying for a piece of artisan craftsmanship. It’s important to note that as of today, it is not possible to create a factory made Hangdrum, that is playable (not a decorative object).
Understanding the Notes
The central note, or 'ding,' is surrounded by other notes that are tuned to create one scale. The ding is the main tone, the tonic. There are 9 or 12 tones Hang drums, in many keys, where Celtic, Kurd and Hijaz and the most common ones. In fact, you don't need to be a music theory expert to create beautiful music with a hang pan.
