The frets of the Buzuk are arranged in a perfect way, allowing the player to play microtonal music. That makes it easy for any musician to play traditional Maqam music. The Buzuk has a total of 6 strings. With 1 Bass string on the top and a thinner bass string on the high course.
The Buzuq is very common in popular music nowadays. It is played with a small plastic risha (pick). The tuning is nonformal and can be changed according to the singer and the song. Usually, it is tuned from G3 to C4.
Undoubtedly, the most important player of the Arabic and Kurdish Buzuq is the Lebanese musician Matar Muhammad. Matar, a gypsy Buzuq player born in 1939 and died in 1995. There's a big question and a debate as to where he was born. Some say in Syria and some in Lebanon.
At the age of 7, Matar was introduced to the Arabic Buzuq. Since then he showed high skills in playing both the traditional Arabic maqam along with more complicated Jazz, flamenco, and other international styles. He is the symbol of the Buzuq and many players are 'copying' his style.
