What makes a Feramis Oud different

Master Feramis Aktaş.

Feramis builds every Oud himself, from the first piece of wood to the final coat of polish. Nothing is handed off. He is a master of French polish, an art he has refined over many years, and it gives his Ouds their deep, glowing finish. He also builds differently from other makers. His bridge is secured to the soundboard with two wooden dowels, a detail most luthiers skip, and it locks the connection for a cleaner transfer of sound.

Every Feramis Oud is made to perfection for one goal, the best possible sound. He chooses the materials himself, knocking on each soundboard to hear the wood, drying the ebony fingerboards, and rejecting anything that is not right. When an Oud is finished, he plays it himself before it leaves his hands.

Made slowly, in small numbers

Feramis works slowly, by choice. He makes only two or three Ouds a month, and demand is high, so an available Feramis Oud is a rare thing. The models above are his concert instruments, in woods like wenge, cocobolo, iron wood and mahogany, many with mother of pearl.
